This is the official website of award
winning sports broadcaster Jerry
Trupiano. I have been a play-by-play announcer on television and radio in all the major sports on local, regional and national platforms. I have also been a talk show host, sports director and a broadcast consultant. My voice has been used in three movies "In The Bedroom", "Mystic River" and "Fever Pitch". I have been saluted on the sitcom "The Office" and mentioned in novels by Stephen King and Robert Parker. I'm a native of St. Louis where I broke into the business at one of the country's great radio stations KMOX. There I learned my craft from greats like Jack Buck, Harry Caray, Dan Kelly and Bob Starr. After leaving St. Louis I went on to enjoy major market success in Houston, Boston and Montreal and the rest is history. What a ride!

On The Record With Jerry Trupiano my weekly podcast is available through the following outlets Apple, Amazon, Spotify, Stitcher and iHeart produced by The Real Voices Of The Game Productions.
The MLB Network produced a show called "The Top 50 Calls All-Time". I was selected for call # 25, the David Ortiz walkoff homerun to beat the Yankees in Game 4 of the 2004 ALCS.
The link below features baseball highlights and a pre-game interview and an in-game interview
I did the play-by-play nationally from two of the sites for the WBC, Miami and San Diego

Jerry Trupiano is one of the most prepared and professional announcers that I have ever had the opportunity to work with. And he still makes it fun. That's a rare and enjoyable combination." - Marc Payton. HBO Sports

THEY SAID IT:
"I have known Jerry since I hired him to be the voice of the Houston Oilers and we were reunited with his move to the Boston Red Sox radio booth where he had a successful 14 year run. Jerry is the consummate professional and a terrific human being. There is no one who works harder or prepares longer than him no matter what the assignment may be. He is a resourceful host, interviewer and a dynamic announcer who excels accross a full range of sports from baseball to hockey to basketball to football play-by-play. Jerry has a quick wit to go with a deep sports knowledge which makes for a very versatile player in your lineup." - David Pearlman, Co-Founder/Chief Operating Officer, American Radio Systems
Two gentlemen who were very instrumental in my career Jack Buck and Dan Kelly. The word great is often over used but not in this case. Great broadcasters, great men and great friends.

My voice has been used in these three movies. Still trying to figure out how I didn't get an Academy Award nomination?
The producers of the office were fans and gave me a nice little "shout out" on one of the episodes
I was the network lead play-by-play announcer for the World League of American Football on TSN in Canada
THEY SAID IT:
"For 11 great years as a team broadcaster for the Houston Oilers, Jerry Trupiano did a magnificent job in capturing the excitement of the Oilers on our radio network and preseason games on television. His ability to make his audiernce feels as if they were sitting on the 50 yard line was a key factor in allowing our team to become a regional and national favorite. When the Oilers/Titans celebrated our 50th Anniversary as a franchisde among the festivities of that year was a celebration honoring the 1960 and 1961 American Football League championship teams as well as members of the team's Ring of Honor. And who did our owner call upon to serve as emcee for that evening, honoring some of the proudest moments in the history of our franchise? You guessed it, Jerry Trupiano. He will long be associated with the club as one of our greatest team members. It was an honor to work with Jerry during my tenure as the Oilers' Media Director, giving me the opportunity to witness first hand his incredible talents." -Bob Hyde, Former Vice President, Tennessee Titans

More Aeros memories in this team promotional video. Please excuse my "12 year old" voice.
I met John Breen by accident and how it changed my life. When the Cardinals came to Houston I would visit with dear friend, Jack Buck. On this one occasion Jack was having lunch with John Breen and we were introduced. After I left Jack must have said some very nice things about me because 3 weeks later I get a call from KTRH management looking for someone to build and run a sports department for them. One of the people that they asked recommendations from was John who at the time was General Manager of the Houston Oilers. He relayed the things Jack had said about me and I became Sports Director at KTRH. Years later John would join me as co-host of Sportsbeat and we delivered the highest rated sports talk show in the Southwest. John became a cherished friend, a second father figure and he is missed.
At this 50,000 watt sleeping giant in Houston, the nation's fourth largest city I was tasked with building a sports staff and creating a sports image for the station. It started with bringing aboard the Aeros broadcasts and over the years adding the Rockets, Oilers, Astros and Monday Night Football and hiring the right people. Our talk show Sportsbeat became such a hit and prolific revenue source we were moved to the afternoon drive slot. I learned to be a broadcast talent from the great broadcasters I wrote about earlier but running and coordinating a department I learned from Bernie Fox at KMOX. The name likely means nothing to you but means the world to me. And I learned too from a broadcast giant, Robert Hyland the legendary General Manager of KMOX.
Growing up in St. Louis I found my inspiration to get into broadcasting listening to Cardinals baseball on KMOX. In my youth the games were called by Hall of Fame broadcasters, Harry Caray and Jack Buck. Major League Baseball never had a greater salesman of their product than Harry Caray. It has been said "Harry could make a chess match sound exciting." For me in the beginning he was an inspiration and later became a friend.
I attended St. Louis University and became a Billiken (what is a Billiken? I don't think anybody knows for sure). The campus radio station KBIL was located on the third floor of a condemned building. The coverage area was a 2 block radius of the campus. One day a call came from KMOX looking for someone to relay scores to the football broadcasters. I got the job and as it would turn out a great on-the-job education from some of the top broadcasters in the industry.
Before there was an ESPN there was KMOX. A 50,000 watt giant that can be heard in 42 of the 50 states. There I learned my craft from Jack Buck, Dan Kelly, Harry Caray and Bob Starr. I have often said the 4 years I spent at KMOX and what I learned about the crafts of play-by-play and sports broadcasting was the equal of getting a Masters Degree at Harvard in sportscasting.
This photo was clipped from the St. Louis Post Dispatch by my mother yesrs ago. In the foreground is Cardinals pitcher, Scipio Spinks who is seated in the pressbox because he made the mistake of trying to slide into Reds catcher, Johnny Bench and suffered a broken leg. Later Scipio showed much greater judgment as a respected MLB scout. In the distance is a college student practicing trying to become a play-by-play announcer. Years later he comes full circle broadcasting the World Series in that exact same booth for the Boston Red Sox. How did my mom find this picture? Come on moms don't miss a thing.
Before my days broadcasting in MLB, the NFL and the NBA my first on-air job was as the play-by-play announcer for the Houston Aeros of the World Hockey Association. Here's a
skate down memory lane. My broadcast partner is former Aeros player and executive, Jack Stanfield.

THE FIVE TOOLS:
In baseball position players are judged on 5 tools - hitting, hitting with power, speed, defense and arm strength. The 5 tools for the play-by-play announcer to be judged on:
KNOWLEDGE - strategy, rules, history, subtleties
ACCURACY - Be fair, be truthful, don't embellish
CREDIBILITY - Be honest, build trust
VERSATILITY - Adjust with the game, if news breaks report it
CONNECTION - Have to be able to connect with an audience
THEY SAID IT - SPONSORS/SALES:
"I found Jerry Trupiano to be one of the most dynamic and exciting personalities to be on the airwaves. The voice is big, the energy is electric and the retun for us with products and services to sell are second to none." - Thomas Barenboim, Past National Chairman Chrysler Jeep USA
"Not only was he knowledgeable about the game, he was quite entertaining. Any sponsor would be encouraged to know that their company/products would be promoted by someone as passionate, enthusiastic and credible as Jerry." - Vin Capozzi, Senior Vice President* Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare
"He was very instrumental in new business development and solidifying client relationships by his warm and gracious demeanor when interacting with clients. He was always willing to extend himself and go the extra mile. Jerry was an enthusiastic team player who understood the sales process." - Randi Kinsella, Former Senior Account Executive Red Sox Radio Network
"I always appreciated Jerry for his willingness to help a seller close a sale and help to service the client with genuine concern for how the campaign was going and if the ad was working, especially with live testimonials. In Trupiano you have a gem who thinks about top line revenue and how he can help it grow. In my sales and management career it just doesn't get any better than that." - Muriel Funches, President Ad Rehab Marketing, Former Sales Manager KTRH Radio
When you become established in this business often times you are called upon to become a commercial spokesperson. If you're lucky you develop a long term relationship that grows into a friendship. That describes my association with I.W. Marks Jewelers. Not only did Irv Marks become a friend but he and his wife, Diane took us in as a member of the family. The Marks led by Irv and Diane were loving and giving people and they are missed. Pictured behind John Breen and I are from left to right sons, Brad and Daniel, Diane and Irv. The Marks family did so much for the city of Houston.
This audio sample is a portion of a Houston Oilers Radio Network broadcast of a game involving the Cincinnati Bengals. My broadcast partner is former Oilers quarterback, Gifford Nielsen. The flagship station is actually KODA-FM as the Oilers became the first major professional sports team to have an fm station as a flagshp.
From time to time in this business you are asked to make personal appearances. On one of those occasions at our friend, I.W. Marks Jewelers I was joined by Hall of Fame running back, Franco Harris of the Pittsburgh Steelers. He of "the Immaculate Reception" fame.
This video sample is a portion of a college basketball game between North Carolina and the University of Houston. My broadcast partner is former North Carolina State basketball player, Terry Gannon, a member of Jim Valvano's national championship team.
Another college basketball sample, this a full game broadcast Rice vs Houston. Commercials removed. My broadcast partner, former NBA player, McCoy McLemore. The man who taught me "the Detroit Lean."
More college basketball Houston at Texas Tech, full broadcast, commercials taken out. Overtime thriller with McCoy McLemore.
There was a time when I was the play-by-play announcer for both the Houston Oilers and the Houston Astros at the same time. While the travel was hectic the combination made for a once in a lifetime experience. The Astros were in New York to play the Mets and I was asked by the Oilers to represent them at the draft table during the NFL draft.
This video is me being interviewed on Fox Sports Network about the current state of the Boston Red Sox.
This audio sample is a portion of a game from the men's NCAA Tournament. It is the Division II Men's National championship Game between Barton and the defending national champs, Winona State. The finish got me another "Call of the Day" salute on
ESPN. My broadcast partner is former St. John's head coach, Brian Mahoney.
There are those involved in Major League Baseball who take a "new age" view of the game who say there is no such thing as a clutch hitter. I submit in this audio sample 4 examples of a clutch hitter, Hall of Famer, David Ortiz
Those into golf are familiar with the story of Francis Ouimet. For those who are not I recommend you check out the movie The Greatest Game Ever Played, it's golf's version of Rocky except the Ouimet story is true. The inspirational story of Francis Ouimet lives on through the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund. Each year the Ouimet Foundation brings in a guest speaker for the largest golf related dinner in the country. At that event the Foundation names a scholarship in the name of the guest speaker. In October of 2021 Jim Nantz was the speaker to be honored. During his presentation and acknowledging the tradion for whom the scholaship is named Jim spoke of giving back to those who helped him along the way. I gave Jim his first job and imagine my surprise when he announced the scholarship would be in my name. Jim Nantz has always been a man of class and character.
